Resources
Composting 101
Composting turns kitchen and yard scraps into free, nutrient-rich soil. It’s one of the most accessible ways to reduce waste and build healthier gardens.
- Balance greens and browns: “Greens” (fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings) provide nitrogen. “Browns” (dry leaves, cardboard, straw) provide carbon. Aim for roughly 1 part greens to 2-3 parts browns.
- Keep it moist, not wet: Your pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Too dry and it stalls, too wet and it turns anaerobic and smelly.
- Turn it occasionally: Aerating the pile every couple of weeks speeds up decomposition and prevents odor.
- Skip meat, dairy, and oils: These attract pests and slow the process. Stick to plant-based scraps and yard waste.
- Be patient: Depending on the method, finished compost can take anywhere from a few months to a year.
Watering & Soil Care
Good watering habits and healthy soil solve more problems than any fertilizer or pesticide.
- Water deeply, less often: Frequent shallow watering encourages weak, shallow roots. Aim for deep watering a couple times a week rather than a little every day.
- Water in the morning: This gives plants time to dry before evening, reducing the risk of fungal disease.
- Mulch everything: A 2-3 inch layer of mulch (straw, wood chips, shredded leaves) conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, and moderates soil temperature.
- Test before you amend: A simple soil test tells you what your soil actually needs, adding fertilizer blindly can do more harm than good.
- Feed the soil, not just the plant: Compost, cover crops, and minimal tilling build long-term soil health that supports everything you grow.
